The Alan K. & Isabelle DerKazarian Foundation Establishes Scholarship to Support Aspiring Journalists
The Alan K. & Isabelle DerKazarian Foundation has established the Michael Malone ’91 Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Rhode Island, honoring the life and legacy of alumnus Michael Malone, a passionate journalist, devoted family man, and beloved member of his community.
Malone graduated with a degree in English, and his writing talent led to a successful career as a journalist, novelist, and freelance writer. A five-time finalist for the Jesse H. Neal Award for excellence in journalism, Malone contributed to numerous publications including The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe and New York. He authored several books, both novels and non-fiction.
“Michael had a gift for connecting with people,” said Susan DerKazarian, Malone’s wife. “He was the kind of person who encouraged others to pursue their dreams. He inspired people, even those he barely knew.”
The idea for the scholarship was sparked by Alan DerKazarian, his brother-in-law, shortly after Malone’s passing. The scholarship is open to any student who has declared journalism as a major at URI, regardless of class year. The fund aims to support students who may be questioning the financial feasibility of continuing in the field.
“Journalism is at a crossroads,” said DerKazarian. “We need brave, passionate voices now more than ever. This scholarship is about giving students that extra push to keep going—to believe that their voice matters.”
Malone’s impact extended far beyond his professional achievements. He was a dedicated volunteer, coach, and mentor involved in organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, The Boy Scouts of America, and local sports teams.
Malone is survived by his wife, Susan; children, Gavin and Charlotte; mother, Shelly Malone; sisters and brothers-in-law, Nancy and Jim Dempsey, Kate and Brian Burke, Eileen and Jim Baker; and eight nieces and nephews.
